We Turn Tension Into a Force for Progress

The Precondition is a practice that makes reality visible and tension productive, so people can do better strategy, innovation, and design, together.

The Conditions Have Changed

Modern Life Lets Us Build and Defend Entirely Different Realities

The Distance Between Our Realities Creates Tension

What we experience, believe, and reward can all be true and increasingly far apart.

Tension isn’t the problem. Wasting it is.

Left unnamed, competing truths divide us.

Made visible and held together, they become the raw material for progress.

The Challenge

Before we can solve what’s technically difficult, we must face what’s humanly difficult. Together.

The Pre/Condition Puts Tension to Work.

Our process makes reality visible and tension productive, so people can do better strategy, innovation, and design, together.

Step 01 · See Reality

Reality Index

Safely surface and measure where realities align, where they diverge, and why.

  1. Each dot is one person.
  2. Everyone answers the same 30 questions on a Likert Scale.
  3. Each answer lands on the same scale.
  4. When people see it similarly, the dots cluster. When they don’t, they spread apart.
  5. That spread shows the distance between their realities.
  6. Across 30 questions, the Index reveals where the team is aligned and where it isn’t.
  7. One-on-one interviews explain what’s driving the distance.
  8. The questions are ranked by distance, bringing the biggest gaps into view.
  9. What was invisible is now visible.

Step 02 · Name the Tension

Tension Landscape

Map and contextualize the competing truths shaping the work, together.

  1. Next, the team comes together in a facilitated session.
  2. They start with the gaps the Reality Index revealed.
  3. Together, they surface what each side of the tension is protecting.
  4. Those competing truths become visible as opposing poles.
  5. The team names the tension between them.
  6. They add the context: where it shows up, what it affects, and why it matters.
  7. Tension by tension, a shared landscape takes shape.
  8. Now the team can see what’s pulling the work in different directions.

Step 03 · Put It to Work

Tension Stewardship

Turn shared understanding into commitments, behaviors, and collective ownership.

  1. Each person makes a commitment—in writing and out loud.
  2. Those commitments become shared behaviors for how the tension will be held in everyday work.
  3. The tension stays visible, but ownership shifts from the leader to the team, so no one person has to arbitrate it.
  4. The team uses those behaviors to navigate the tension and make better decisions, strategies, and ideas together.

The tools don’t change. Our capacity to use them together does.

Where It Matters

The hidden tensions beneath consequential work.

Most teams pick a side before they understand what each side protects. The Precondition holds both truths in view and puts the tension to work.

Use Case: Strategic Planning

A strategy can settle the choice before settling the tension.

An animation. A strategy document appears faintly. Across it, tensions like ambition and assurance, speed and inclusion. The slash passes once, like an X-ray, and reveals what lies beneath: tradeoffs get decided; the tension keeps traveling. Then the document comes forward, and both ends of every tension stay tied to it: neither side disappears.

Some tensions survive the strategy. We give people a way to work inside them.

Use Case: Innovation & Design

The objection that threatens the idea can actually make it better.

An animation. A design process appears faintly: problem, then idea, then prototype. Across it, tensions like desirability and feasibility, possibility and protection. The slash passes once, like an X-ray, and reveals what lies beneath: people’s risks get treated as resistance instead of design material. Then the idea comes forward, and every tension feeds into it, both sides at once, neither eliminating the other.

Risk is reality arriving early. We turn it into design material.

Use Case: Global Activation

Strategy reaches the field before the field reaches the strategy.

An animation. A hand-drawn field map appears faintly: a health centre, villages, roads, an outreach point, a river and the hard-to-reach side beyond it. Across it, tensions like consistency and context, scale and local capacity, each flowing one way, from the strategy toward the field. The slash passes once, like an X-ray, and reveals what lies beneath: HQ sees the tradeoffs; the field sees what those tradeoffs become. Then each flow becomes two-way.

Local friction is strategy feedback. We turn it into activation intelligence.

Different Rooms. Same Pattern.

The work changes. The hidden tensions don’t.

About

The Pre/Condition is Applied Optimism for Consequential Work.

I started with three words on a post-it: reclaim our humanity. I keep seeing systems built for growth and speed squeeze the humanity out of how we confront problems, especially the kind that are hard to define and even harder to solve. In trying to make everything faster, cleaner, and more predictable, we discarded the very differences that make human ingenuity possible.

I remain stubbornly optimistic about what people can build together when those differences become visible and the tension between them becomes useful, without asking anyone to leave their experience at the door.

Let’s put your tension to work.

Build your team’s capacity to hold competing truths and turn them into everyday decisions and shared action.
